A Golden Palette of Color
The Poppy Project has added to the beauty of the Foothills by spreading poppy seeds along Highways 4 and 49. The program was approved by Cal Trans Adopt a Highway and welcomed by members of the local community. It was a five year program, completed by 2010.
The seeding originally ran from Stevenot Bridge at New Melones Reservoir to the southern city limits of Angels Camp. Several years ago it was expanded to include private property from the Glory Hole Recreation area in Angels Camp to Mokelumne Hill and up Highway 4 to Murphys. 140 pounds of seeds were planted by about 40 Garden Club volunteers. Thanks to the generous donations from the community, hydro seeding was done for the first time in the Fall of 2005.
As the poppies flower and reseed themselves the bloom will be more beautiful as each year passes. “There’s gold in them thar hills” will be heard again!
